How to prepare to create a website?

We’ll work together

Creating a website is a process that requires involvement from both the developer and the client. Some clients believe that all it takes is finding a good specialist, sending over a few lines about their business, and then just waiting for the finished site. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. A developer handles the technical part, but it’s the client who knows their company, its needs, and goals best. That’s why preparing to build a website is a joint effort that starts long before the first click in the code editor.

1. Define the goal and structure of your website

Before you start preparing anything, think about why you’re building the website. Is it meant to be a company portfolio, an online store, or maybe a blog? Once you’re clear on the goal, figure out the structure. What subpages will you need? Services, contact, gallery, blog, privacy policy? Write it all down – this will be the starting point for the developer. Without it, you might end up with a site that doesn’t match your expectations.

2. Prepare content and images

Texts are essential. Don’t leave them for the last minute – writing content always takes more time than expected. The best option is to prepare it in Google Docs – it’s easy to edit and share. Avoid sending screenshots or random messages on Messenger – it complicates the process and can cause mistakes.

Photos are just as important. If you have your own materials, upload them to Google Drive or send them as a ZIP file via email. Don’t paste images into Word documents or send them via chat apps – it ruins the quality, and the developer ends up having to fix them. If you don’t have any images, consider buying professional stock photos or organizing a quick photo shoot.

3. Think about features you need

Will your website include a payment system? A contact form? Social media integration? Maybe you need a booking system or newsletter sign-up? Make a list of everything you’d like your website to have. This will help the developer choose the right tools and solutions. The more details you provide, the better the final outcome.

4. Stay in touch with your developer

Building a website is an ongoing process, where the client and developer stay in regular contact. Expect your developer to ask questions, request materials, or check certain things with you. The more engaged you are, the better the site will reflect what you need. Remember – your developer isn’t a mind reader. They don’t know how your business works or what you like unless you tell them. Your involvement is key.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and test things

If something’s unclear – ask. Developers often use technical language, but it’s their job to explain everything in a way that makes sense to you. Once the site is in the testing phase, check how it looks and works on different devices – phone, tablet, desktop – and share your feedback. This is your project, and it should work exactly the way you want it to.

Creating a website isn’t just the developer’s task – it’s a shared project that requires both sides to be involved. Being well-prepared is key to success. Gather your content and photos, define the structure and features, and stay in regular contact with your developer. That’s how you end up with a website that’s not only beautiful, but also functional and tailored to your needs. Good communication is half the success.
